Spinning Globe

<When Galileo threw that awful bomb

about the world spinning round, all denied his silly view but one,

Descartes, wise in science too.

But Descartes had little heart for this strange new world and so devised another, invisible to all,

Then called his friend

Galileo:

“I concede, my friend, that you are right,

Your facts are straight. I see your point,

But there’s more to it, you see

much more to it than that.”

Now ever since, should facts obtrude

upon the way we’d rather that the world

should be, we too respond:

“Ah yes, I see, you’re right, I must concede,

but there’s more to it, you see, my friend,

there’s more to it than that,

much more to it than that.”

And you, too, confronted by unpleasant proof

(perhaps about some personal fault?)

can so retort:

“Ah yes, my friend, I see your point,

(just like the top of your head)

but you see, my friend,

there’s more to it than that, you see,

much more to it than that.”
