Well, my letter in response of the TC article “if not now, when?”didn’t make it. But neither did anyone else’s. I suspect that the timorous TC does not want to open up what they see as a hive of hornets. Circulation trumps all.
And this attitude on the part of the media keeps us from hearing a lot about tragedies and violent acts in this world, leaving that opportunity in the hands of the social media. Unfortunately the news we get there is often embellished by the author.( One quick test is to see how many emotionally arousing words are used by the sender, which tend to aggravate hostilities between religions and similar groups.)
Take the long history that precipitated the Gaza story. If only the Jews had been willing to abandon their silly fairy tale and accept the Christians equally silly fairy tale, this awful, endless persecution would never have occurred. Not only the Catholics would have been satisfied, but so too the Protestants under Luther, who only became enraged when they refused his “kind and forgiving” offer. And much the same would probably be true of the Mosque bombing Sunnite and Shiites and no
too long ago also between the N. Ireland Protestant and Catholic bombers.
These were never initially conflicts over territory or oil–or for anything of material value—just prompted by the vacuous ideas swirling around in some paranoids’ head.
Easy to see how an alien would see us akin to bloodthirsty sharks, eager for the kill, in a world where a man’s head is sawed off, dozens executed, a woman is stoned to death for being a woman, where genocides are breaking out all over the place, like weeds rising up everywhere.
Good thing we humanists are here to heal the planet ( you first, please?)

this astonishing Universe and it is sad to see
so many dreaming it away on spiritual fantasies”
