Critics of Trudeau’s intention of appointing senators misses the point entirely. This has nothing to do with existing liberal Senators. Trudeau is talking about future appointees to the Senate.
Most everybody knows that our present system of appointing senators has proven to be a farce. Look, a person works hard to get his party elected and succeeds. So how does his party reward that person? Why by giving him/her the plum–a safe senate seat for life. Surely we can understand why said appointee could feel entitled?
Remember it is not like he has considerable experience in economics or some
other quality that he brings to the table–this is not about a duty or
challenge – it is simply a reward for serving the party so well.
And we are worried because the proposed system might not be democratic? When, pray tell did Duffy get elected by the people? Have we not heard Preston Manning complaining that these Senators have not been duly elected by the voters? So why now start complain about that just because Trudeau is suggesting having them appointed by a non partisan board,
Now how could an appointment by a non political group experienced in Civics not
do a better than this system of rewards?
