The trouble with women is they have moved on to the 21st century, leaving much of society behind, still looking for their moral guidance from the manuscripts of the first Century.

Once upon a time, the biggest guy did get to make the laws .Might was truly right. And women were treated as chattels or prizes. And, unfortunately, those philosophies of ancient time have been persistently reinforced in generation after generation:

Too many Popes have spoken out against women whom they view as  temptress and here is a Protestant’s voice:

” God created Adam master and lord of living creatures, but Eve spoilt it all, when she persuaded him to set himself above

God’s will. ”Tis you women, with your tricks and artifices ,that lead men into error.’

( Martin Luther, The bondage of the Will,DCCXXVII)(1483-1546)

Indeed, as Barbara W. Tuchman points out , in “A Distant Mirror” (1978): “Woman (in the 14th century) was the Church’s rival, the temptress, the distraction, the obstacle to holiness, the Devil’s decoy.”

But  Christians are not the only ones–look at the way many Moslem women are treated. Fact is, all our religions are rooted in antiquity and it is this unremitting focus on our ancient past that has been used to justify criticism of a women’s life style as well as making her a potential target  of unstable men whose attitudes towards women  have been  pounded into them by  priest or Inman from childhood on.

As long as she is an agreeable wife and mother she is respected by all  but as soon as she starts thinking independently she invites censure and the threats that often go with it  If we think this theme  of woman as the evil lure of innocent men is not still simmering below the surface of our culture, how do we explain how 50 women could be killed by one man in Vancouver without arousing any  attention  from the media till after the fact?  So where were we?

We have a lot of catching up to do to bring the rest of our society into this century. We must expose and criticize ancient manuscripts for the damage they have done and the damage they are still doing. We need to challenge every attempt to use the bible as a justification for anything and keep at it every way we can.. We need to drag the rest of society kicking and screaming, into this 21st. Century,.
