Idealogical violence

RE: Suicide bomb kills 75 at Pakistan volleyball game

Another five soldiers dead, a suicide bomb kills scores in Pakistan, It goes on and on and
all out efforts seem to fall short of stopping this senseless carnage. We need a more
effective approach. What can cause normal human beings to think it is alright to kill
their fellow -innocent– humans as well as themselves?

Voltaire once said that if you can make people believe in absurdities you can get them to
commit atrocities and these suicide bombers offer living proof that he was right. So our
real problem-the one we must solve-is how do we keep people-all people, not just the
Taliban– from believing in absurdities?

The only way I know is to work very hard on insisting that people do not make any claims
that they cannot show good, substantiated, evidence for. If we are going to get rid of
this Achilles’ heel of ours we are going to have to train everyone to be very skeptical
about any evidence that cannot be thoroughly proven to be true. We must vigorously
denounce any unsubstantiated statements we hear and demand solid, empirical evidence from
all.

I know that such an approach will intrude on our personal comfort zones but it is, I’m
convinced, the only way we can stem ideological violence.
